fake news in the media

A message that is going viral in WhatsApp claims that online portal like Goibibo and MakeMyTrip are now banned.  It has created a wave of panic among those who have booked through them.

Both online portals cater to bus, flight and hotel bookings throughout India and a ban on honoring their booking could possibly mean that the pre-bookings made through their portals will be canceled.

Online travel portal MakeMyTrip denied reports that spread across social media that the hotel bookings on its platform as well as on Goibibo have been banned.  They confirmed that  “it is business as usual”.

A viral fame news message on social media claimed that MakeMyTrip and Goibibo have been banned.

According to MakeMyTrip CEO, all bookings on its platforms are being honored in the hotels where bookings were made through the portal.

“There is misinformation being spread in social media about hotel bookings on MakeMyTrip and Goibibo not being honored. This information being spread is completely baseless,” Rajesh Magow, MakeMyTrip Co-founder and CEO, said in a statement.

“We continue to operate our business as usual, with approximately one lakh room nights booked just yesterday on our platforms,” he added.

The CEO’s reaction came in the backdrop of some hotel partners in Ahmedabad expressing concerns on their commercial terms with MakeMyTrip and Goibibo.

The online portal has approximately 55,000 domestic hotels and 500,000 international hotels as a partner.

MakeMyTrip confirmed that the bookings on their platform across the cities are being honored and there are no hassles for any customer.

What is the truth behind this news?

Around 270 hoteliers in Ahmedabad are facing issues with online portals like Goibibo and MakeMyTrip.  They complain that the online portals overcharge the hotels and give away offers without consulting the management of the hotel.  As a protest, the hoteliers have started canceling a booking that comes through these portals.

Unlike what the social media message informs, no ban has been imposed on either of the portals. One can still book hotels on the online portals,  but the hoteliers claim that they will cancel these bookings once the customer reaches there hotel and rebook the room, offline, at the same price.

Online portals  – Hoteliers not honouring bookings

300 hoteliers in the country are not honouring the bookings from two portals i.e. goibibo and MakeMyTrip.

The hoteliers decided to boycott the bookings made by 2 online portals – MakeMyTrip and Goibibo from December 1st 2018.

The hoteliers have alleged that indiscriminate discount offered by these online portals has affected their business adversely.  These 2 online portals are offering heavy discounts on bookings.  These companies are charging a commission to the tune of 35% from the hoteliers.

The discount of 35% offered by these online portals is making the business difficult for the hoteliers.  It has become difficult to sustain their business as the hoteliers started loosing revenue.

How it works???

If someone has made a booking at a hotel in a city through these 2 online portals, it is not valid.  The customers will not be entertained at the hotel.    The customers who have booked through them will not be served on showing the vouchers.  All the customers have been notified about the decision by the hoteliers.

Not to create inconvenience to the customers, the hoteliers are offering the rooms to them.  They will be charged the same rate but they have to cancel the booking made through Goibibo and MakeMyTrip.

Hotels at Bengaluru

Hoteliers from Bengaluru are also facing these problems.  They are also deciding to follow in the same foot steps in boycotting the discounting policy for these 2 portals.
