As per the Karnataka High Court order, the process of taking over the administration of Mahabaleshwar Temple of Gokarna was initiated with Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada district S.S.Nakul taking charge as Chairman of the Temple Monitoring Committee.
After getting the clarifications from the auditor general, the state ordered the DC to take charge of the temple. The DC oversaw the process of taking possession of the values pertaining to the temple including ornaments. All the valuables were weighed, recorded and then was taken over by the Committee.
The historical temple was administered by trustees for several years. However, on August 12, 2008, the then BJP government led by Yeddyurappa decided to hand over the management of the temple to the Ramachandrapur Mutt.
According to sources, the HC itself formed the Overseeing Committee and made the DC its chairman. The panel comprises district SP and Kumta Assistant Commissioner and it has advised the state government to appoint scholars.
