Protest – BSNL Staff, Officers – Nationwide

Protest starts from Friday by BSNL Staff nationwide.    BSNL employees have announced a three-day nationwide strike against introduction of VRS and reduction of retirement age.

The ten central trade unions that extended their support to the proposed strike included INTUC and CITU among others.

Protest nationwide :

The Central trade unions on 13th February said they will extend support to the proposed three-day protest by employees and officers of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. on February 18-20.

The employees of the State owned BSNL are launching a nationwide protest against the decision to reduce retirement age.   The officers and employees are in fear of privatization of the sick telecom giant.

This is in fear of some private co. taking over the loss driven state-run enterprise.

Suggestions of expert panel :

The expert panel suggested the reduction of retirement age from 60 to 58 years.  Another suggestion is the introduction of a VRS System.

Introduction of VRS results in loss of job to over 54000 employees.  The current number of employees at BSNL stand at  174312 workers.

The employees are completely against the suggestions of the panel as it will lead to several people becoming unemployed.

Protest by BSNL Employees :

The employees will be organizing rallies around the country on 15th Feb.  This will be followed by a 3 day long protest from 18th February.  The protest is organized by the All Union and Association of BSNL (AUAB)

According to Ranjit kumar, Leader AUAB, Bengaluru, “with latest development, the government is pressing for privatization”.
